Issue: Early Childhood Development Centers (ECD) and After-School Enrichment Centers (ASE) in South African townships grapple with significant challenges stemming from limited resources and capacity constraints. These centres face overwhelming student numbers, exacerbated by the financial constraints of many parents unable to afford nominal fees. Consequently, teachers shoulder additional burdens, dipping into their own pockets due to insufficient government subsidies.
Goal: To enhance ECD and ASE centres by addressing infrastructure deficiencies, boosting capacity, and providing expanded opportunities for student development and education.
Beneficiaries: 16 x ECD and 2 x ASE centres; 650 learners
Objectives
Infrastructure Enhancement
Infrastructure needs at ECD and After School centres are identify and address by leveraging available networks, resources, and volunteers. This includes repairs, maintenance, and securing essential furniture, toys, and educational equipment.
Capacity Development
Teachers are supported in accessing capacity-building programs to enhance the quality of education provided to their learners.
Expanded Learning Opportunities
Existing networks and volunteers are utilised to create supplementary learning opportunities for students enrolled in these centres, broadening their educational experiences and alleviating the teacher's workload burden.
